a frase acima foi publicada em 1973 no American Biology Teacher, 35: 125 - 129 e tem sido amplamente citada tornando-se um mantra da biologia evolutiva. A intenção original da frase é a oposição ao criacionismo científico. Dobzhansky defendia que religião e ciência são concepções diferentes. Veja abaixo outra citação de um dos maiores representante da Nova Síntese ou Neo-Darwinismo (movimento que unificou as leis de Mendel e a Teoria da Evolução de Darwin/Wallace).
